Wim Verdouw
ICT Architect Infrastructure
DUO
Ever since the start of my career in IT, connectivity was one of my main interests. The internet was a happening and a phenomena. Later email followed, bleing a killer-app.
DUO is the governmental institution responsible for a great many financial and logistical aspects concerning education and as such we take care of registrations, deriving and distributing information and communicating with several other institutions. Among those are schools and universities, the Dutch Tax Authority, the municipal personal records database and others. Talking about connectivity.

At DUO, we have been at the top when it comes to using virtualisation of both servers and clients, using VMware Virtual Infrastructure and VDI. As an ICT architect infrastructure I am involved in projects introducing new techniques and growing towards more redundancy. One really great project I participated in for the last four years concerns the building of a new office, which included two new datacenters.
A few years ago, cloud computing arose. From the moment I learned what potential the concept has, I started thinking about using it. At the moment, we are working on a roadmap. Some colleagues call me a believer, I’d rather say I see opportunities but risks as well.
